“Enough Fabric and Yarn to Last Me…”
Is the phrase, “enough fabric and yarn to last me the rest of my life,” truth or myth? Sometimes, it seems that there are not enough days in the week to use up all the stash we have. Yet, we keep buying more stash. That is not even logical or rational. BUT WE KEEP DOING IT!
In this new year/new decade I am going to change the course of this irrational behavior. I will bust the myth of having enough fabric and yarn to last me the rest of my life.
When we get caught in the web of new and exciting things, we forget about the things we already have. We’ve never touched that stuff since the moment we brought it into the house. What if we did that with people?
Yikes! I think someone would want to put us away for neglect or something else…like involuntary manslaughter, I suppose. They would be dead in short order if we forgot about them.
I don’t want to stash anything anymore. I want to use up what I have while I can. Someone down the line doesn’t want to go through and decide what to do with all this stuff!
I have a little backstory involving some hoarders. Or maybe they were just people with hoarding tendencies. Well, I was the one who wound up with most of the stuff they stashed and never used. Or I had to sort through and make the decisions about the stuff they stashed. Either scenario takes a monumental amount of time and energy. I decided this year that I am not going to be that person.
To this end, I have put my buying on hold. I told three people so I could assure myself that I wouldn’t back peddle without backlash. We could all use a little insurance like that. It is good to be put back in your place when you step out of line. AND I told all of you so now you have to hold me to it. 😉
You may ask, “how do you expect me to hold you to that? I haven’t the vaguest idea what you already have in your stash?” So, that is a valid question. I will answer it this way…trust me. I have enough fabric and yarn to last me for the rest of my life. Or do I?
I celebrate this empty tub, be it very small, but empty, as my first success toward using up the stash. In that tub were two hunks of Shetland/alpaca mix fiber for spinning. It was about 4oz. in total. I added to that about another 3oz. of just alpaca. It was carded, spun and plied. Now I have two small skeins of bulky yarn ready to turn into a nice warm hat! Empty bucket, usable material, and a project lined up. This could be a LOT of fun!!
As time progresses, I will be showing tips, tricks, and techniques. These tips will involve all the different types of crafts utilized in this experiment. I hope you will find them useful and enjoy what is to come.
